Fish Puttu




In South India this dish called "Sura Puttu"  made only with shark fish . In US we can't get shark so replaced with Tilapia. I got this recipe from here and changed slightly.



Tilapia Fillet       1 No

Onion                2 medium size

Green chilli        2 Nos

Garlic crushed   3 -4 Clove

Red chilli Powder  1 tbsp

Turmeric powder   1 tsp

Coriander Powder 2 tbsp

Mustard seeds       1 tsp

Curry Leaves        4 - 5 Nos

Coriander leaves for garnishing


Clean and cut fish into small pieces (Don't scramble it now). Add red chilli powder,coriander powder,turmeric powder and small amount salt to fish pieces mix well and keep it aside for an hour.

After an hour cook the fish by any of the below  3 ways


  • In a pan add 1/2 cup of water and bring to boil. Now add fish ,turmeric and some more salt. Let it cook for 5 -6 minutes. When the flesh turns white completely drain and discard the water.
  • Heat oil in pan add fish pieces and fry until it get cooked.
  • Or in a Idly cooked steam the fish pieces for about 5 - 6 minutes.
Scramble the cooked fish and keep aside.

Heat oil in pan add mustard seeds ,curry leaves,Green chillis and onion. Cook the onion until translucent.

Now add the scrambled fish,salt and cook for 5 minutes in a medium flame. 

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice.
