Vazhaipoo Kootu | Banana Flower Kootu


My hubby is a big fan of Vazhai Poo, but in US we not able to get this flower even in Indian grocery Store. He searched every where , after 2 years of searching we found one shop which sells this flower. I never eaten Vazhai Poo in any form before marriage, to make me eat my hubby used to tell me it has this n that medical benefits like that. Once i tasted this recipe, i too become big fan of Vazhai Poo.

Generally people will tell , to make this recipe we have to soak this flower in buttermilk . But i didn't soak the flower in buttermilk and it doesn't have a any bitter taste. Only thing is we need to remove the thick black stalk and petal like plastic found in each florets.


Ingridents

Vazhaipoo                   3/4 cup (Chopped finely)

Channa Dal                 1/4 cup

Moong Dal                  1 tbsp

Onion                          1 medium

Tomato                        1 medium

Green chilli                2 -3 Nos

Sambar Powder          1 tbsp

Turmeric Powder       1/4 tsp

Fennel Seeds             2 tsp (Roughly powdered )

Curry Leaves            2 -3 Strands

Coriander Leaves     For Garnish

Salt to taste


Method:

Clean and chop the florets. Take the chopped florets in a bowl , sprinkle some turmeric powder,mix well. This will prevent the florets from decoloring.

Wash and soak channa dal in water for 30 minutes.

Heat oil in a pressure cooker / pan, add fennel seeds and curry leaves. Once splutter add onions , cook till they translucent.

Add green chilli , tomato and some salt. Cook till tomato become mushy.

Now add florets ,channa dal ,Moong dal , sambar powder and required amount of salt and mix well. Close the lid and pressure cook it for 2 -3 hisses.

Once pressure went , garnish with coriander leaves and serve with Rice.
