Kollu Urundai | Horsegram Laddu

While watching some cooking videos in YouTube, i saw one video named as "kollu laddu". Immediately i choose that video to watch. The channel has many cooking videos with traditional food items. After watching some videos i searched amount the author and came to know that , he wrote one cook book named "Nalla Soru" and it contains many traditional food items. Me and hubby are big fan of traditional foods so ordered the book through online, so i can able to learn traditional recipes.  Here is my first recipe from that book.

We almost about forgot our traditional food items , but  fortunately the awareness is picking up now.


Kollu /Horsegram      1 cup

Jaggery                      1 cup

Ghee                          3 -4 tsp

Cashew Nuts            few

Raisins                     few


In a pan dry roast the kollu for 3 - 4 minutes and let it cool down.Once cool down Blend it as powder in a blender.

Shred the jaggery and keep aside. In a mix bowl , mix powdered kollu and jaggery

Heat ghee in a pan , fry cashews and raisins .Mix along with the kollu and jaggery mixture and make a ball.


If not able to make a ball , use some more ghee or milk.

Eggless Mocha chocolate Muffin

I like the mocha flavor and coffee too. When i seeing recipes using instant coffee powder in baking , i thought how it will taste. When i tasted the muffin it really good to taste a coffee flavor with the chocolate.Two favorite flavors in one muffin..This muffins is are perfect for any time of day.

Whole Wheat flour               1 1/2 cup

All purpose flour                   1/2 cup

Sugar                                     1/2 cup

Unsweetened Coco powder   2 tbsp

Baking  Powder                    2 tsp

Milk                                     1 cup

Oil                                       1/4 cup

Plain Yogurt                       1/4 cup

Salt                                     1/8 tsp

Instant Coffee Powder       2 -3 tsp


Preheat oven to 360F . Grease and line muffin pan and keep aside.

In a mixing bowl , add whole wheat flour , All purpose flour , coco powder and salt whisk well.

In a separate bowl , mix sugar and all wet ingredients. Now add instant coffee powder (I used Nescafe) and mix well.

Now add dry ingredients to wet ingredients at 3 batches .

Scoop the batter into lined muffin tray and bake it for 15 -20 minutes.

Papaya Juice | Summer Drink

Papaya is regular fruit in my home.It is rich in  nutrients and minerals like calcium, chlorine, iron, phosphorus, potassium, etc. Specially it rich in fiber so it helps to cure constipation.This fruit is good for diabetic since it has natural sugar


Papaya               1/2

Honey               3 tsp

Ice cubes (Optional)        


Peel Papaya and remove seeds.Chop the papaya in to cubes

Put papaya pieces , honey and ice cubes (ice cubes is optional you can replace it with cold water) .
in a blender.Blend as smooth puree.

If it is to thick and some water and blend well.Pour it in a a serving glass and serve chill.

Palak Pakoda | Spinach Pakora

I recently joined group called "Shhh Cooking secret Ingredients" group was started by Priya of Priya's Versatile recipes . For this challenge members of group mutually share two ingredients and they have to cook with this secret ingredients.They shouldn't reveal those secret ingredients to any one in the group and post the recipe on 16 -18 of every month. This month my secret ingredients are spinach and onion given by Priya aka.

I want to try this spinach pakoda long before , when Priya aka gave me these ingredients i decided my mind to do this recipe. Easy and healthy Pakoda. Love to have these crispy pakodas with tea or coffee in a rainy day.


Besan Flour                  1 cup

Spinach                        1 cup (Chopped)

Rice Flour                   1/2 cup

Onion                           1 No

Fennel seeds                1 tsp

Ginger Garlic paste     1 tsp

Chilli powder             1 tsp

Coriander Leaves      2 tbsp

Salt to taste

Oil for deep frying


Remove the steam ,wash and chop the spinach.

In a bowl mix chopped onion , salt and 2 tsp of hot oil. Mix til the onion oozes water.

Now add besan ,rice flour ,red chilli powder , coriander leaves ,spinach,ginger garlic paste and coriander leaves.Add required amount of salt and mix well.

Don't add any water the spinach and onion will oozes water.

Mean while heat oil for deep frying, when oil is hot drop roughly shaped balls into oil.

Fry until turn golden brown.Remove from oil and drain the excess oil.

Serve this crispy  pakoda with coffee or tea.

Lemon bars

From the day when i saw the lemon bars click on the cover page of "Enjoy cooking with Costco way" book , i wanted to try that recipe. But somewhat i heisted to try how it will be taste. For this month Baking Partner challenge Suja of Kitchen Corner Try it suggested Lemon bars and Chocolate Walnut Bars i immediately decided  to try this Lemon bar.


For the crust

All purpose flour                1 cup

Sugar                                  1/2 cup

Butter                                 1/2 cup / 1 stick

Salt                                     a pinch

For the Topping

Egg                                    2 Nos

Sugar                                3/4 cup

Lemon Zest                     1 tsp

Lemon Juice                   1/4 cup

All purpose Flour           3 tbsp

Milk                               1/2 cup

Salt                                1/8 tsp

Powder sugar               for dusting


To Make the crust

Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Line parchment paper in 8 inch square pan and keep aside.

In the bowl, cream sugar and butter until light fluffy. Add salt and flour ,beat on low speed until dough formed.

Dump the crust into prepared pan and using fingers to press the dough into bottom of the pan.Bake for 15- 20 minutes until edges are browned.

Using the fork prick crust and cool it in a wire rack

To make filling

In a bowl , whisk eggs and sugar together until combine and thick.Add milk , flour,lemon zest and lemon juice one by one and mix well.

Pour the mixture into the baked crust still its warm.Bake it again for 18-20 minutes until firm to touch.

Cool in room temperature and refrigerate for an hour before cutting into bars.

Dust the top with powdered sugar and then serve.

Strawberry Milkshake

I always have an doubt , whats the difference between milkshake and smoothie? So i searched for the difference.Here is what i got in Google search

Milkshake  - The base of the milkshake from ice cream or milk. Flavor is added as a syrup or from fresh fruit.

Smoothie - Thick beverage made from real fruit with milk or yogurt.Some grains or oatmeal added for thick consistency


Milk                                          1 cup

Strawberry                               4 -5 Nos

Sugar                                       1-2 tsp


Clean and chop the strawberry 

Put milk strawberry and sugar in a blender . Blend it in to Coarse paste. Now add milk  and blend as frothy and smooth.

Pour into serving glass and serve chill.

Kara Kuzhi Paniyaram

Kuzhi Paniyaram is a famous chettinad recipe. It is a quick and healthy recipe when you have left over idly batter.The batter prepared for paniyaram is same as Idly/Dosa batter. So i always prefer to use left over Idly batter making this paniyaram. It can be served either as a breakfast or as a evening snack.


Idli Dosa Batter          1 cup

Onion                         1 No

Green Chilli               2 Nos

Curry Leaves            1-2 Spring

Hing                         a Pinch

Mustard Seeds        1/4 tsp

Urad Dal                 1/4 tsp

Grated Coconut     2 tbsp (Optional)

Salt to taste


Heat oil in a pan , add mustard seeds,once splutter add hing , urad dal and curry leaves ,cook til urad dal become golden brown.

Add onion and green chilli , cook til onions are translucent. Switch off the flame and add grated coconut if using.

Take idli batter in a bowl , now add the tempered item and mix well.

Heat paniyaram pan with a oil , pour the spoonful of batter into each hole and cook for 2 minutes.

Turn the paniyaram on other side and cook till done. Once done transfer into the plate and do the same for rest of the batter.

Serve it along chutney of your choice.

Bread Potato Balls

Had a bread packet expiring today ,so want to make some thing out of it. But with less calorie. So choose to make  bread balls with veggies in my fridge.You can add whatever veggie you want. I decided to make it as less calorie so made it in paniyaram pan or you can either deep fry or shallow fry.


Whole Wheat Bread                4 Slices

Potato                                       1 No

Grean Peas                              1/4 cup

Onion                                      1 No

Ginger                                    1/4 inch

Green chilli                           2 -3 Nos

Coriander Leaves                 2 tbsp

Salt to taste


Pressure cook potato and green peas for 2 -3 hisses.Once pressure released mash potato and green peas and keep aside

Trim the edges of the bread and mash along with little amount of water

 Add mashed potato mixture to the bread.Add chopped onion ,ginger ,green chilli and coriander leaves and add required amount of salt mix well.

Divide in to equal size balls, heat paniyaram pan ,drizzle some oil in each hole.

Put the divided ball in a each hole and cook on both the sides.

Serve it with chutney or you have as it is.

Appalam Kootu

Appalam Kootu is a simple and easy to make recipe. I like to add fired appalam in any kootu , but it has been long i cooked this appala kootu.I don't have any vegetables in my fridge, so thinking about what to cook today suddenly this kootu came to my mind.This appala kootu goes well with kara kuzhambu or vatha kuzambu.


Appalam            4 -5 Nos

Onion                 1 No

Tomato              1 No

Green chilli        2 Nos

Channa Dal      1/4 cup

Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp

Sambar Powder   1 tbsp

Salt to taste

To Temper

Fennel seeds Powder             1 tsp

Mustard Seeds                       1 tsp

Curry Leaves                         2 Strands


Pressure cook all above ingredients except appalam and 'To temper' item for 3 -4 hisses.

While cooking dal , deep fry the appalam and keep aside.

Once pressure gone, heat oil in pan add mustard seeds,Fennel seeds powder,once splutter add curry leaves and pour this mixture into cooked dal and veggie mixture.

Break the appalam and added it to the kootu.Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

Passiparuppu Paniyaram

I always prefer to use ready to  use batter for Idli or Dosa. Similarly for Paniyaram too. This Pasiparuppu paniyaram is also a ready to use batter .I got this recipe from here. and modified according to my taste bud.


Moong Dal               1 cup

Onion                       1 no

Ginger                      1 inch

Curry Leaves           2 Strands

Coriander Leaves    2 tbsp (Chopped)

Fennel Seeds           1 tsp

Rice flour               2 tbsp

Salt to taste


Wash and soak moong dal for 2-3 hours. Grind Moong dal with green chilli and fennel seeds as a coarse paste.

Add chopped onion ,coriander leaves ,ginger and rice flour to the batter. Add  required salt and mix well.

Heat paniyaram pan and pour oil in each moulds. Drop spoonful of batter into moulds and cook on medium flame.

Flip it and cook on other side . Serve it along with chutney of your choice.
